5 Tips for a Defiant Attitude

1. Don’t acknowledge limitations

We all have limitations, all of us. It’s a fact of life, if we didn’t we would be superheroes, and life would be boring. Life is often boring, but we must always work to tear away from the chains that shackle us. To overcome, and be relentless in our work to overcome our limitations. Maybe to the point of not even acknowledging limitations. And there’s a case to be made for that, tribal generations would say flying like a bird is impossible, but every day we do, with the help of aeroplanes.

The key here is to honor the limits you have today, while working to overcome any limitations in the future. Of course, there is a case to be made for soley living in the present, but this is kind of a way of doing that in a way the ensures forward momentum. After all you take full ownership of your limitations, today!

2. Keep believing in a way outs

Adapt and be flexible. Start leveraging your creativity on your toughest problems. There’s essentially an infinite amount of different approaches to take on solving the same problem. As we become flexible problem solvers, we move past the limitations of any single approach. Start filling your toolkit with many means, to help you take on tougher and tougher problems.

Creativity is an underrated weapon of the mind. It’s what has allowed humanity to develop weapons, and martial arts that make the weak powerful. Think of nuclear weapons as a perfect example. It is such a powerful weapon that it can annihilate the entire world, and it needs only the push of a button to be deployed.

Besides the technology that allows a weak person to be extremely dangerous, there’s military tactics, martial arts, and all kinds of methods to make people stronger. And it doesn’t end at making a person physically dangerous, but also allows a person to develop others means, be it in business, awareness (meditation, yoga), physical strength, emotional intelligence (psychology, philosophy), and on and on it goes. Creativity is one of humanities most brilliant capacities.

3. Learn self respect

Even if the entire world hates you, there’s only one person who’s guaranteed to be in your corner; you! No one intentionally creates a terrible life for themselves, even if all the options you see are weak, or a reach you should always respect yourself enough to continue trying. And it might feel pathetic, doin’ a whole lotta coping just to stall for a bit more time so you got a minor shot at somehow making it. That shouldn’t be enough to stop you respecting yourself.

Think of the friends you’ve had and how you’ve supported them. Most people are kind to their friends, and we say to be kind to ourselves. Treat yourself like someone you are entrusted with supporting, as a certain Lobster fan said once. I would go even further, treat yourself more kindly then you treat others. Which may sound kind of selfish and toxic. Is it?

Treating yourself kinder and more gentle than a close friend might sound egoistic, but hear me out! You know yourself, far better than you know any close friend. And if you knew them as well as you know yourself, likely you would be even kinder to them then you already are. So apply that to yourself, and take a load off. After all, you’re responsible for fixing your problems, not others, and so is everybody else.

4. It’s not over, till it’s over

Sometimes a bit of time can be enough to change a situation in your favor. A lot of problems resolve without you actively doing something to fix them, and that may sometimes be your only option. Eastern spirituality has a lot of focus on slowing down, and not going too fast. And that’s real, taking the time you need to craft, understand or create something does wonders for what you end up crafting, undestanding or creating.

Holding on even when failure seems guaranteed, is a noble aspect of human nature. It’s at the core of the underdog story. A person who keeps hanging on, improving, and fighting to do the impossible. And when they succeed, it’s so well earned.

5. Having an alpha dog attitude

Maybe all you need is a bit of attitude, a bit less trust when others don’t deserve it. You’re in charge of your own life, even if it might not feel like it. A lot of attitude, and not much technique, is its own type of technique. Maybe all you need is walk with dignity. And remember, no matter what:

Don’t give up!
