Vunerability in the 21st century
In the 21st century we value vunerability more than we did in the past. There’s a lot less stigma towards mental illness and differences and now we try to express ourselves honestly and authentically, and to not hide our flaws. We are free to be open and show ourselves how we really are. That’s something beautiful about the time we are living in, there’s no need to be like everyone else. We are who we are, and we are free to let it show.
The internet generation!
Somewhere between millennials and gen z the internet become completely normal. Internet definitely was a game changer, connecting the entire world and giving everyone more information than they can handle. There’s something beautiful about having a shared culture on the internet, and it is still shaping us and our development even today. Nowadays we’re plugged in constantly and it’s created more acceptance of difference.
To get lost in variety
There’s so much variety nowadays. Music, movies, food, activities.. There’s a tonne of variety and color. Variety is the spice of life! We all enjoy a bit of the good life, but what the good life is for you doesn’t have to be the same as it is for me.
We no longer have these strict rules of behavior. If you’re a man and you want to wear pink, feel free! Nobodys stopping you. No one is telling you to man up and stop being such a wimp. At least, not as often. You’re free to show your emotions.
Memes, memes, memes…
The internet gave way to a brand new set of values. A new way of viewing the world, and a new way of communicating known as memes. Meme can be as small as just throwing out a stupid joke, and can be as much as ironically listening to a genre of music. Like a person who listens to country music because he wants to be seen as a redneck, but doesn’t actually relate to rednecks. I’m not saying anyone would go that far but it’s sort of possible? In theory it is.
Let your freak flag fly!
I’m hoping the shared culture of the internet can lead to something marvellous like a new cultural revolution. There’s so much shared culture and we can all be a part of it as long as we got wifi. The hippie revolution was fantastic, but imagine what the hippie revolution would be if there was a way for all the hippies to communicate with eachother! It would be popping!
There’s no way to know what will happen, but we can all appreciate this shared platform. Alongside it is more acceptance of differences, in the western world. Let them be who they are! There’s so much room for originality nowadays, and I’m here for it!
There is a limit to our tolerance
Even with all our tolerance of difference, there is a limit to it, which is a bummer for those on the outside of what is accepted. We need to be careful to not upset people, and the consequences for upsetting people can be much greater now that we are all plugged in. I would say we need to find our own place in the world, our own spot where we fit in. We can’t just relax and not make effort.
We must be careful, navigating this brave new world, but at the same time we don’t need to be like everybody else. Which is good news, we can express ourselves more authentically. There’s so much information and confusion that a lot of people get lost in the confusion. I believe this is a transition into the truly digital age.
