Music is expression of self.
Music is a way to communicate a lot of things about living. Music teaches you how to act to impress, how to speak in a cool way, how to feel and connects you to a higher ideal. Musicians are tapped into a different frequency, which is where the music leads. It’s more about how to feel and behave, and if you look at as a way to learn about living, to get a different point of view. Don’t just look at it like entertainment. It’s an artform!
Music comes from the heart, and any real musician will give you something valuable once you get a handle on what they are singing and feeling. There’s a lot to be learned from music. Every real artist bares their soul to the audience and we can’t take that for granted. All art has a point.
Try to get a grip on what the songs are truly saying. What does it mean? Jazz, in the 21st century, is just elevator music but in the 40s truly knowing Jazz was an entry point to what was hip. There’s a meaning and a certain behavior and attitude attached to music which can put you in touch with deeper truths.
Analysis, and depth
Don’t be a passive music listener, try to expand and grow. Look for new music and try to gain a new perspective on something you know. Really dig into the deeper aspects of music to expand and grow. There’s a lot of finesse, and a different type of perspective to be gained. Don’t just listen to it for fun, but view it as purposeful.
Understanding music comes down to both having a clear view of what is being conveyed, and having some common grounds in term of who you are. You can really use music as a pathway to personal growth. It is possible, but not if you stay in box of only listening to your favorite bands or to a degree even your favorite genre. All music is captivating so try to move outside your favorite genre once in a while just to see if there’s something there for you.
Pop is the most easily relatable, and me I believe pop can be a part of the scope of even a sophisticated music listener. There’s no shame in liking a few pop artists, even if your main thing is punk rock. And on other end of the scale, don’t be afraid to delve into some weird genres like black metal or experimental jazz. A bit of variety is cool!
Real artists heritage
Musicians will build on the work done by older musicians. Newer punk rock bands grew up listening to older bands, and it reflects in their music. Kind of like scientists, “standing on the shoulders of giants.” In fact it’s common knowledge that musicians will be inspired by other bands, but it really isn’t understood how much that really plays into what they create. Each musician has something a bit new, and is further developing the genre and the music. At least a good musician does that.
It’s sort of like a web of interconnected behaviors and lifestyles, that converge into a single point of rock, or rap or punk, etc. Different genres will be inspired by outside music as well, to a degree. And it is an ever developing artform. The hertiage of a musician will define their place in the scene.
The culture
Culture is one of those concepts that have been really understood at a high level thanks to hip hop. They talk about it, “the culture.” And what does that really means? It is our shared behavior and belonging to a group. The fact that if we all do it a similar way, together, we become stronger not just collectively, but individually. And that is a big part of what music is meant to convey.
I hope we can erase the divide between high culture and low culture. You can look like a bummy losers and still read complex literature, just the same as you can be a high society type and listen to Bruce Springsteen. There is no divide. In fact all points of views must be pursued.
The purpose of embodying culture, is to give a point of refrence. You feel as if it is something familiar, therefore you can accept it even when it isn’t something you have direct experience with.
Enjoy!
Beyond all this, music is entertainment. So enjoy it. Don’t take it too serious, but listen to it for what it gives. Good vibes, and a cheerful mood. Have fun and enjoy.
